Corporate Fun and Humour to Increase Productivity
Do you believe that fun and laughter in the workplace can increase productivity? Studies show that employees with a sense of humour do a better job than people with little or no sense of humour. In fact, those who have fun on the job are more creative, more productive, and better decision-makers. Furthermore, aside from getting along better with co-workers, they also have fewer absences, late and sick days compared with those who are not having fun.
Using fun and humour in the workplace, however, must be appropriate in nature, as to when and how it is used. Moreover, it should not be offensive to the ordinary or reasonable person, as it is meant to encourage people to see the absurdity in our thought processes, perceptions, behaviours, and the like. Hence, aside from being used to lighten up during tense occasions, it can also be effective in reducing the level and intensity of conflict among employees, if used properly.
If you handle a group of employees, make sure that you have adequate ways to encourage laughter in your team. Take note that laughter can release endorphins, which are even more powerful than morphine. These can promote a sense of well-being and optimism. Always remember that the presence of boredom that arises from repetitive tasks can likewise rise out of the failure of having a chance to be creative.
Company events will be able to teach employees how working together as a team can be fun and productive. Furthermore, implementing and maintaining fun and humour programmes need not be a costly undertaking. Nevertheless, even if there are some expenses associated with this concept, the benefits may be manifold in terms of the reduction of cost associated with absenteeism, decreased productivity, turnover, and many others.
