Three of the best: Breastfeeding cover-ups

Three of the best: Breastfeeding cover-ups tried and tested - MamascarfOne of the first things my midwife asked me during my pregnancy was: “will you be breastfeeding?” and at risk of inciting exclamations of horror, I dutifully answered: “yes of course.”

Now, I wasn’t paying lip-service but I understand as well as anyone who has already raised one child, that breastfeeding is a learned art. And one not without complications - the main one being feeding in public or in front of family. The thought of exposing any part of my upper torso in a public place brought me out in a cold sweat. I had to find a solution that spared my blushes and yet protected my right to feed my son.

So, off I went to discover what was available for nursing mums. Of all the slings, wraps and clothes in production, I chose three to trial: The ‘Mamascarf’, ‘Baby Babette’ and ‘Frugi Mother Organic Breastfeeding top’.

I came across the Mamascarf (£16 from www.mamascarf.co.uk) at The Baby Show in February when I was 35 weeks pregnant. I was impressed with the neutral colour and design that wouldn’t draw attention to the fact that you were feeding, and the additional support it provides to take some of the baby’s weight. There is even a little handy pocket, ideal for storing your breast pad. Superb!

Three of the best: Breastfeeding cover-ups tried and tested - Baby BabetteThe Baby Babette (£11.50 from www.babybabette.co.uk) is also a breastfeeding cover-up but has a muslin stitched into the reverse – perfect when you don’t want to be fishing about for a separate burping cloth. The neck is wide enough to keep an eye on your little one and as both of you are covered up, there’s not much chance of your baby accidentally exposing you to the world. The only problem I had was the colour – the bright red and polka dots drew more attention to me than if I had been using a shawl or muslin. Not to worry though, the vast choice of designs caters for all tastes and if this was the only drawback, then the product is very successful.

Three of the best: Breastfeeding cover-ups tried and tested - FrugiMy final choice was a breastfeeding top from www.welovefrugi.com. The short sleeved, empire-line, tie-back top (£28.00) looks like any other casual wear but with a difference – the double layer conceals two vents, making it almost impossible to see anything other than a baby cuddled in close. I absolutely adored my top as it was made from soft organic cotton and I wore it on my first day home from hospital – flabby belly and all. Frugi do dresses and other tops and t-shirts in their nursing range that is stylish and practical making a refreshing change from maternity wear you may well be desperate to get out of.

I applaud any mum who wants to give nursing a go – and if she can find something to make that experience even more enjoyable and practical, then the manufacturers of these products should be very proud of themselves.
